Gatchina

Gatchina

The history of Gatchina as the ensemble of parks and palaces began in 1765 when the Empress Catherine II gave it as a gift to her minion ? the count G.Orlov. The count organized hunting grounds in Gatchina ? Menagerie ? and began the building of the palace. For the construction of the palace the architect A.Rinaldi was engaged.

He finished the Great Gatchinsky castle in 1781 and worked out the initial layout of the landscape park. In 1783 Orlov died and Catherine II bought the palace. She bestowed Gatchina on her son ? the grand duke Pavel Petrovich. In 1795 V.Brenna was engaged for the reconstruction of the palace. He widened the Palace park and adorned it with pavilions, hothouses, terraces and bridges. In 1796 Pavel Petrovich became the Emperor Pavel I and Gatchina became the royal residence. In 1798 N.Lvov created the Priory castle on the bank of the Black Lake. It was erected for the Maltese order that was leaded by Pavel I. Lvov also projected several constructions in the Palace park. In 1799-1801 some changes were done in the Gatchina palace by A.Zakharov. In 1801 Pavel I was killed and the Widow Empress Maria Fyodorovna became the owner of Gatchina. In 1809-1811 some alterations were done be her order by A.Voronikhin.

In 1828 the Emperor Nicolay I used Gatchina as the headquarters for the military maneuvers. In 1844-57 there was the restoration of the castle and new interiors were designed. At that time the statue of Pavel I was placed in front of the Gatchinsky castle. Under Alexander II Gatchina became a place of the royal hunt. In 1918 the ensemble of palaces and parks of Gatchina was nationalized and later culture preserve was established here. In 1941-44 the German forces razed the Gatchinsky castle to the ground and damaged the parks and palaces of Gatchina. Nowadays Gatchina is guarding by the UNESCO.

The ensemble of the palaces and parks of Gatchina includes the Gatchina Castle with the Palace park, the parks Menagerie and Silvia. The Priory castle and the Priory park are also a part of the ensemble of Gatchina.
