The Artillery Museum
The Artillery Museum

The Artillery museum was created with the order of the Emperor Peter I in 1703. The collection of weapons got a title Zeughaus (?Arsenal? German). In 1776 the Arsenal moved in the building of the Arsenal on the Liteyny Avenue. In the 1860-s the architect P.Tomansky constructed a new building of Arsenal at the Crownverk of Peter and Paul fortress and in 1869 the museum was carried here.

The Zoological Museum

The Zoological Museum was founded in 1832 and began working as the public museum in 1838. At first the exposition of the museum consisted of the exhibits of Kunstkammer (the cabinet of curiosities). But with the expansion of the state borders of Russia and with the growth of the number of travelers the display of the museum began increasing permanently. After that the museum needed a new building and it moved to the southern warehouse of the Exchange. The new museum opened in 1901.

The Kunstkammer
The Kunstkammer

The Kunstkammer means ?the cabinet of curiosities?. In 1714 it was created by Peter I, who had seen such cabinets in Europe. The collections, bought by the Emperor, were assumed as a basis of the Kunstkammer. Initially the Kunstkammer was in the Summer palace, but after the purchasing of the collection of A.Seba Peter I ordered to construct the new building for the collections of curiosities.

The Alexander Suvorov Museum
The Alexander Suvorov Museum

The museum of Alexander Suvorov is the first museum, founded only on the voluntary contributions. It was opened in 1904 in the building, given Life Guards as a gift by Transfiguration regiment. The building was constructed specially for the museum by the project of A. von Gogen and it was built in the style of Russian fortifications ? with the watch tower and the walls with loopholes. An emblem of Duke Suvorov and two mosaics ?Suvorov takes the field in 1799? and ?Suvorov, crossing the Alps? are painted at the building.

The Fiodor Dostoyevsky Museum

The museum of the great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky is located on the Blacksmith?s (Kuznechny) alley. The literary-memorial museum was created only in 1971. It is the old flat that Dostoevsky rented twice in his life. The writer passed here the last years of his life ? from October 1878 till the day of his death - 28t January 1881. At this flat Dostoevsky wrote his last works ? ?Karamazov brothers? and ?The Doppelganger?.

The Russian Ethnografic Museum
The Russian Ethnografic Museum

The Russian State Museum has the ethnographical department ? the Russia museum of Ethnography. It is located on the square of Arts in the building, designed in the style of late classicism. The Emperor Nicolay II founded the museum in 1902 and the building of the museum was projected by the architect V. Svinyin in the beginning of the XX century.

The Alexander Pushkin Memorial Flat
The Alexander Pushkin Memorial Flat

The memorial flat of the great Russian poet and writer Alexander Pushkin is located on the embankment of the Moyka River. Pushkin spent his last year of life in this flat ? from September 1836 till 29th January 1837, when the poet died from the fatal wound, got at the duel. The mansion belonged to the family of the prince Volkonsky. After Pushkin?s death the flat was rebuilt some times and only in 1927 the museum was opened here.
